The Shaggy D A ** (1976, Dean Jones, Suzanne Pleshette, Tim Conway, Keenan Wynn) – Classic Movie Review 8470

Director Robert Stevenson’s 1976 The Shaggy D A is Walt Disney’s belated sequel to the 1959 hit The Shaggy Dog, with Dean Jones in Tommy Kirk’s old part as the barking mad attorney who transforms into a chatting canine.

This time he stands against DA John Slade (Keenan Wynn) and fights local government corruption. This easy-going mix of knockabout, chases and fantasy is based on a novel called The Hound of Florence by Bambi writer Felix Salten. The Shaggy D A is a notch down from the original, though appearances by various scene-stealers and old-timers help.

Also in the cast are Tim Conway, Suzanne Pleshette, Jo Anne Worley, Vic Tayback, Dick Van Patten, Dick Bakalyan, Warren Berlinger, John Fiedler, Hans Conried, Iris Adrian, Shane Sinutko, John Myhers, Ronnie Schell, Jonathan Daly and Pat McCormick.

There is a further sequel: The Return of the Shaggy Dog.
