Texasville **** (1990, Jeff Bridges, Cybill Shepherd, Timothy Bottoms) – Classic Movie Review 8704

Twenty years on director Peter Bogdanovich films a sequel to his first triumph The Last Picture Show (1971), with almost all the original special cast returning.

It is set 32 years on in the summer of 1984. Now Jeff Bridges’s character Duane Jackson is a troubled oilman, fat, 50, and unhappily married to Karla Jackson (Annie Potts), but he meets up again with his old sweetheart Jacy Farrow (Cybill Shepherd).

Bogdanovich’s 1990 drama Texasville is a splendid meditation on the sadness of middle age, movingly acted, acutely written by Bogdanovich, based on Larry McMurtry’s novel, and directed to heart-warming effect.

But it is sad to report that, for all the good work, Bogdanovich did not enjoy another triumph. Texasville flopped at the box-office, grossing only $2,268,181 in the US, and most of the reviews were terribly grudging.

Also in the cast are Cloris Leachman, Timothy Bottoms, Eileen Brennan, Randy Quaid, William McNamara, Su Hyatt, Angie Bolling and Harvey Christiansen.

Texasville is directed by Peter Bogdanovich, runs 124 minutes, is made by Cine-Source and Nelson Entertainment, is released by Guild, is written by Peter Bogdanovich, based on Larry McMurtry’s novel, is shot by Nicholas Josef von Sternberg, is produced by Barry Spikings and Peter Bogdanovich and designed by Phedon Papamichael.
