Pier Bonnema stars as gay 17-year-old Tommy, who discovers his father’s hidden relationship with a man, in writer/ director Vincent Tilanus’s sweet and subtle Dutch LGBTQ friendly drama film And Someone Else.

A gay teen accesses his dad’s emails and finds he is still in touch with a man he had a love affair with before meeting the boy’s mom, in writer/ director Vincent Tilanus’s sweet and subtle Dutch LGBTQ friendly drama film And Someone Else, with three fine performances.

Pier Bonnema stars as gay 17-year-old Tommy, who discovers his father’s hidden relationship with a man, prompting the boy to make a choice between keeping silent or, he thinks, risking the breakup of his family by confronting his father and informing his unsuspecting mother.

It is almost Bergman-like in its austere understatement and broken sentences, working perfectly. The boy should have just shut up, revealing the truth to both parents causes immense damage, hurt and chaos, but he has just found out that he has been dumped by some boy he barely knows but has fallen for.

It’s the naivete of adolescence, but the kid is far from stupid, and bit by bit he stumbles along the road to try to repair the damage.

And Someone Else is a first-rate emotional and personal drama, very involving and rewarding, and would certainly repay a second viewing.
