Tropic Holiday ** (1938, Bob Burns, Martha Raye, Dorothy Lamour, Ray Milland) – Classic Movie Review 9214

Director Theodore Reed’s 1939 musical comedy Tropic Holiday stars Ray Milland as Hollywood film screenwriter Ken Warren, who, for sweet inspiration, travels to Mexico, where he falls for the lovely Manuela (Dorothy Lamour).

Tropic Holiday is an unexceptional, but generally pleasing Paramount studio production, featuring mild Mexican musical interludes, songs from Lamour and some amusing comedy from Bob Burns and Martha Raye.

The bright acting is a better recommendation than the too easy-going script and the over-laidback handling.

It was nominated for one Oscar: Best Music, Scoring (Boris Morros).

Also in the cast are Martha Raye, Bob Burns, Binnie Barnes, Tito Guizar, Michael Visaroff, Bobby Moya, Elvira Rios, Fortunio Bonanova, Matt McHugh, Pepito Pérez, Chris-Pin Martin and Frank Puglia, with the San Cristobal Marimba Band.

Tropic Holiday is directed by  Theodore Reed, runs 78 minutes, is made and released by Paramount, is written by Don Hartman, Frank Butler, John C Moffett and Duke Attebury, based on a story by Don Hartman and Frank Butler, is shot in black and white by Ted Tetzlaff, is produced by Arthur Hornblow Jr, and scored by Boris Morros.
