The Outriders ** (1950, Joel McCrea, Arlene Dahl, Barry Sullivan, Claude Jarman Jr, Ramon Novarro, James Whitmore, Jeff Corey, Ted de Corsia, Martin Garralaga) – Classic Movie Review 10,273

Director Roy Rowland’s 1950 film The Outriders stars Joel McCrea, Barry Sullivan and James Whitmore as three US Civil War soldiers who escape from a Yankee jail and join a wagon train carrying gold, which is ambushed by rebels.

The Outriders is an interesting and involving, but over-familiar and minor Western, despite strong writing by Irving Ravetch (screenplay and story), plenty of good action, sprightly performances by McCrea and Whitmore, attractive Technicolor photography by Charles Schoenbaum and lively score by André Previn.

It also stars Arlene Dahl, Barry Sullivan, Claude Jarman Jr, Ramon Novarro, James Whitmore, Jeff Corey, Ted de Corsia, and Martin Garralaga.

Also in the cast are Robert Williams, George Tyne, Nipo T Strongheart, Russell Simpson, Clint Sharp, José Sáenz, Charles Rivero, Frank Richards, William Phipps, William ‘Bill’ Phillips, Merlyn Nelson, Alex Montoya, Warren MacGregor, Gil Herman, Joe Dominguez, Billy Dix, Dick Curtis, Gene Coogan, David Clarke, Ralph Bucko, Steve Brown, Dale Belding, Gregg Barton and Dorothy Adams.

Shooting took place in Duck Creek, Aspen Mirror Lake, Strawberry Valley, Paria, Long Valley, and Asay Creek in Utah.

It cost $1,621,000, earned $2,179,000 and lost MGM $497,000.
