The New Interns ** (1964, Michael Callan, Dean Jones, Telly Savalas, Stefanie Powers, Barbara Eden, Kaye Stevens, George Segal, Inger Stevens) – Classic Movie Review 11,304

As the title suggests, director John Rich’s reasonably amusing 1964 black and white medical soap The New Interns is a sequel to 1962’s popular hit The Interns, with Michael Callan again starring as Dr Alec Considine, alongside mostly new characters and cast members. It also stars Dean Jones, Telly Savalas, Stefanie Powers, Barbara Eden, Kaye Stevens, George Segal and Inger Stevens.

The New Interns is is happily far removed from reality, despite stories like the one about Dr Tony ‘Shiv’ Parelli (George Segal) operating on the hood who raped his girl, Nancy Terman (Inger Stevens).

The main stories are the progress of flirtatious intern Dr Alec Considine (Michael Callan)’s romance with nurse Laura Rogers (Barbara Eden), and obstetrician Dr Lew Worship (Dean Jones)’s sterile marriage to nurse Gloria (returning Stefanie Powers).

Telly Savalas again plays Dr Dom Riccio, the head of the hospital who administers all the madness in the hospital. Though not always credible, The New Interns is certainly brisk, busy and professional, a capable sequel.

Also in the cast are Lee Patrick, Greg Morris, Michael Fox, George Furth, Sue Ann Langdon, Jimmy Mathers, Gregory Morton, Kaye Stevens, Michael Vandever, Ellie Wood Walker, Dawn Wells, Adam Williams.

Kaye Stevens, who was Golden Globe nominated as Best Supporting Actress in her film debut as Nurse Didi Loomis in 1962’s The Interns, returns in the role.

Writer: Wilton Schiller.

RIP George Segal, who died on 23 aged 87.
