The Fighting Prince of Donegal *** (1966, Peter McEnery, Susan Hampshire, Tom Adams, Gordon Jackson, Andrew Keir) – Classic Movie Review 7560

Director Michael O’Herlihy’s 1966 The Fighting Prince of Donegal stars Peter McEnery as the peace-loving but brash young rebel Irishman Hugh O’Donnell, who inherits the title of Prince of Donegal.

He is kidnapped and jailed by the wicked Captain Leeds (Gordon Jackson) and held ransom on behalf of the Viceroy of Ireland. But he escapes and sets out to get his own back.

Walt Disney’s entertaining British-made 16th-century adventure is well cast, with a dashing young McEnery and an against-type Jackson both exactly right. It is a handsome looking movie, beautifully photographed in Technicolor by Arthur Ibbetson, and full of spirited action and adventure.

The screenplay by Robert Westerby is based on Robert T Reilley’s book Red Hugh, Prince of Donegal. It is filmed at Pinewood Studios, Iver Heath, Buckinghamshire, England.

Also in the cast are Tom Adams, Andrew Keir, Norman Woolland, Maurice Roëves, Donal McCann, Peter Jeffrey, Bill Owen, Richard Leech, Marie Kean, Peggy Marshall, Patrick Holt, Fidelma Murphy and John Forbes-Robertson.

The Fighting Prince of Donegal is directed by Michael O’Herlihy, runs 110 minutes, made by Walt Disney Productions, released by Buena Vista is written by Robert Westerby, based on Robert T Reilley’s book Red Hugh, Prince of Donegal, is shot by in Technicolor Arthur Ibbetson, is produced by Bill Anderson, is scored by George Bruns.
