Some Voices *** (2000, Daniel Craig, David Morrissey, Kelly Macdonald, Julie Graham, Peter McDonald) – Classic Movie Review 6888

Director Simon Cellan Jones’s interesting and worthwhile 2000 dark comedy drama Some Voices features an early full-on performance by Daniel Craig as Ray, a schizophrenic just discharged from psychiatric hospital, who causes havoc in his devoted brother Pete (David Morrissey)’s restaurant.

Craig is outstanding but he leaves room for Kelly Macdonald to shine as the wild Scots woman Laura, who Ray falls in love with, prompting him to stop taking his meds, and leading to a crisis point.

Set and filmed in a then grungy, run-down Shepherd’s Bush, London, this is a difficult though often compelling film, shot through with the vibrancy of realism and a lot of pain, and the brother-brother relationship is profitably explored.

Also in the cast are Julie Graham, Peter McDonald, Nicholas Palliser, Edward Tudor-Pole and Ashley Walters.

The writer is Joe Penhall. Ray Winstone starred in the original London stage production.
