Scenes from a Mall *** (1991, Bette Midler, Woody Allen, Bill Irwin) – Classic Movie Review 9938

Bette Midler and Woody Allen star in producer-director Paul Mazursky’s 1991 comedy Scenes from a Mall as busy Beverly Hills marrieds Deborah and Nick, who fall out of and in love again at the local shopping mall on their sixteenth wedding anniversary.

Though not especially funny or incisive, Scenes from a Mall is extremely likeable and well played by the charismatic stars.

Director Mazursky fills it with throat-catching moments and classic romantic songs. Did you ever expect to see Woody in bed with Bette? The mall set is a marvel. It is scored by Marc Shaiman, who appears as Pianist.

Also in the cast are Bill Irwin, Daren Firestone, Rebecca Nickels and Paul Mazursky.

It follows Mazursky’s Down and Out in Beverly Hills (1986).

Scenes from a Mall is directed by Paul Mazursky, runs 89 minutes, is made by Touchstone Pictures and Silver Screen Partners IV, is released by Buena Vista Pictures (1991) (US), is written by Roger L Simon and Paul Mazursky, is shot by Fred Murphy, is produced by Paul Mazursky, is scored by Marc Shaiman, and is designed by Puto Guizman.

It was made cheaply ($3,000,000) and earned well – $9,563,393 US gross.
