Olivier, Olivier **** (1992, Brigitte Roüan, François Cluzet, Jean-François Stévenin, Grégoire Colin) – Classic Movie Review 9772

Writer-director Agnieszka Holland’s 1991 drama Olivier, Olivier is her underrated successor to her 1990 hit Europa Europa.

It is an extremely affecting tale of a distraught French suburban family who eagerly embrace the broke rent-boy imposter who turns up in Paris claiming that he is their son who has vanished six years previously as a nine-year-old.

This dark tale has a lot of resonance and it is beautifully handled and acted with a power that grips.

The main cast are François Cluzet, Brigitte Roüan, Jean-François Stévenin, Grégoire Colin, Frédéric Quiring, Marina Golovine, Emmanuel Morozof, Faye Gatteau and Mathias Jung.

Olivier, Olivier is directed by Agnieszka Holland, runs 110 minutes, is made by Oliane Productions, Films Antenne 2, Canal +, Soficas Investimages and Centre National du Cinéma et de l’Image Animée, is released by Bac Films (1992) (France) and Sony Pictures Classics (1993) (US), is written by Agnieszka Holland (adaptation and dialogue), is shot by Bernard Zitzermann, is produced by Marie-Laure Reyre and is scored by Zbigniew Preisner.
