Monster Pies *** (2013, Tristan Barr, Lucas Linehan, Rohana Hayes) – Classic Movie Review 12,761

Tristan Barr stars in the 2013 romantic drama film Monster Pies as Melbourne schoolboy Mike, who can’t believe his luck when his English teacher pairs him up for a class assignment on Romeo and Juliet with the new kid Will (Lucas Linehan).

Tristan Barr stars as decent, sensitive Melbourne schoolboy Mike, alienated and alone until a new boy arrives at his school. Mike can’t believe his luck when his English teacher pairs him up for a class assignment on Romeo and Juliet with the new kid Will (Lucas Linehan).

They soon start to realise the strength of their feelings as they spend more and more time together working on a school project monster home movie version of the Shakespeare play they are studying – Frankenstein meets the Wolfman, with Mike as the monster and Will as the Wolfman. But there are monsters on the scene…

Ah yes, Romeo meets Romeo. But will they be a pair of star-cross’d lovers? Writer-director Lee Galea’s Australian romantic drama film Monster Pies (2013) is incredibly sweet but also horribly bitter-sweet. It’s a nice, nice film, very well done, and the earnest acting by Barr and Linehan is tremendous.

There are maybe a few wobbles and uncertainties in the script and in some of the support performances, but, with its flavourful Aussie Melbourne atmosphere and equally flavourful characters, overall it is an excellent high scorer.

Director: Lee Galea. Writer: Lee Galea.

Stars: Tristan Barr, Lucas Linehan, Rohana Hayes.

Monster Pies is based on a short story Lee Galea wrote in 1995 when he was 15.

Pina Tuteri sings her own two songs at the school dance and has nine other songs featured in the film.
