From Paris with Love * (2010, John Travolta, Jonathan Rhys Meyers, Kasia Smutniak) – Classic Movie Review 3838

From Paris with Love is a disgracefully bad, utterly risible (but not in a good way) action comedy with a totally mismatched star team in John Travolta and Jonathan Rhys Meyers, neither of whom should be trying to do this kind of thing. OK, I’ve heard of the Odd Couple, but this is ridiculous.

Complete with a dodgy American accent and a fake-looking moustache, Dublin-born Meyers gives a phony, puny performance as James Reese, a young US embassy official in Paris. There he teams up with Travolta’s bald and bearded rogue CIA agent Charlie Wax, who is piling up the corpses in pursuit of a Pakistani terror cell plotting a terrorist attack on the city.

Director Pierre Morel’s 2010 movie is trash without any flash, conviction, wit or agreeable sense of humour. Meyers and Travolta are the Little and Large of action comedies – and that ain’t good. With rotten acting, daft dialogue in Adi Hasak’s screenplay, ropey action sequences, a useless plot and a ridiculous climax to the ‘story’, this is squirmingly Luc-warm stuff this time from Luc Besson, who produced and wrote the ‘story’.

This is the very sort of movie that will send Travolta’s career back into pre-Pulp Fiction hell. No merci.
