Writer, producer and director Guillermo del Toro’s 2025 American Gothic sci-fi horror film Frankenstein is all flashy CGI and uninvolving acting.

A miscast Oscar Isaac is not at all good as Victor Frankenstein, and Mia Goth, Felix Kammerer and Christoph Waltz keep hitting wrong notes as Elizabeth, William and Henrich Harlander.

It’s as if Guillermo del Toro has no true feeling for the novel or how to bring it to the screen.

Astonishingly, the film manages to be pretentious, long-winded and boring.

It is 150 minutes where James Whale’s brilliant Frankenstein is just 70 minutes.

Astonishingly again, the film received five nominations at the 83rd Golden Globe Awards, including Best Motion Picture – Drama, though it didn’t win any, and nine nominations at the 98th Academy Awards, including Best Picture, Best Adapted Screenplay and Best Supporting Actor (Elordi). The London Film Critics’ Circle nominated Elordi as Supporting Actor of the Year, but he didn’t win there either.
