There Was a Young Lady ** (1953, Michael Denison, Dulcie Gray, Sydney Tafler, Bill Owen, Geraldine McEwan) – Classic Movie Review 11,646

Director Lawrence Huntington’s 1952 British black and white film There Was a Young Lady stars Michael Denison and Dulcie Gray, along with Bill Owen, Sydney Tafler and Geraldine McEwan.

Denison plays David Walsh, a gem trader who seeks the criminals who have abducted his highly spunky and efficient secretary (Gray), Elizabeth Foster, after she into a gang committing a smash and grab robbery.

There Was a Young Lady is a modest but pleasant comedy thriller vehicle for the genial married stars, based on a BBC radio serial of the day by Vernon Harris and John Jowett

Don’t look for anything new in this time-passing support movie but it is still mildly entertaining with sprightly performances from a spry cast. Denison and Gray are good company, with Gray outstanding.

Playing dim-witted secretary Irene, it is the movie debut of Geraldine McEwan, aged 21, who did not film again till No Kidding in 1960, and then not again till The Dance of Death (1969).

There Was a Young Lady runs 84 minutes. It is written by Lawrence Huntington (screenplay), Vernon Harris (story) and John Jowett (story), is made at Walton Studios and on location in London by Nettlefold Films, and distributed by Butcher’s Film Service (UK), is shot in black and white by Gerald Gibbs, is produced by A.R. Rawlinson and Ernest G. Roy, and is scored by Wilfred Burns. The sets are designed by Frederick Pusey.

The cast are Michael Denison as David Walsh, Dulcie Gray as Elizabeth Foster, Sydney Tafler as Johnny, Charles Farrell as Arthur, Geraldine McEwan as Irene, Marcel Poncin as first jeweller, Robert Adair as Basher, Tommy Duggan as A.R. Weatherspoon the pools man, Bill Shine as Charlie, Duke of Chiddingford, Bill Owen as Joe, Kenneth Connor as Tom Bass the cart man, Basil Dignam as second jeweller, Ben Williams as man delivering safe.
