Co-writer/ director Allen H Miner’s 1957 American black and white Western film Black Patch stars George Montgomery, Diane Brewster, Tom Pittman, Leo Gordon, and Lynn Cartwright.

George Montgomery and Leo Gordon star as former US Civil War buddies Clay Morgan and Hank Danner, who meet up again in a New Mexico town. The former is now town marshal Sheriff Clay Morgan, while the latter is a wanted bank robber. Diane Brewster also stars as Danner’s pretty wife Helen, and naturally there is a love triangle as both men desire her.

[Spoiler alert] Eventually Morgan is suspected of killing Danner to keep the loot and his wife after jailing him for a bank robbery.

The stalwart B-movie Western cast helps along this downbeat, unusual, modestly entertaining cowboy programmer, produced by Montgomery and co-written by actor Leo Gordon and co-starring his wife Lynn Cartwright. Long experienced Western star Montgomery fits the star role like a comfortable old glove, Leo Gordon gives a fine display of practised villainy, and several excellent character actors appear briefly to advantage, especially Strother Martin, Sebastian Cabot and Ned Glass.

It is notable as the first film with music by Jerry Goldsmith.

George Montgomery and Leo Gordon teamed again in the 1967 Western film Hostile Guns.

Also with House Peters Jr, Stanley Adams, John O’Malley, Gil Rankin, Strother Martin, Ted Jacques, Peter Brocco, Sebastian Cabot, Ned Glass, and Jorge Treviño [George Trevino].
