The Young Lovers * (1964, Peter Fonda, Sharon Hugueny, Nick Adams, Deborah Walley) – Classic Movie Review 11,126

Producer-director Samuel Goldwyn Jr’s 1964 black and white romance film The Young Lovers is a feeble, over-familiar college drama, though amiable young Peter Fonda and Sharon Hugueny try to make us care about a pair of unmarried college students dealing with an unwanted pregnancy.

Fonda plays art student Eddie wants to live a free life, then falls for Pam (Hugueny) and they fall in love. Eddie says he won’t marry her, but then Pam is pregnant.

George Garrett’s naff script, based on the novel The Young Lovers by Julian Zimet [Julian Halevy], and Goldwyn Jr’s unfluid direction defeat the actors, though. The film lacks the needed smoothness, freshness and polish it requires to work. It is the only film directed by Samuel Goldwyn Jr.

Also in the cast are Nick Adams, Deborah Walley, Beatrice Straight, Malachi Throne, Joseph Campanella, Kent Smith, Jennifer Billingsley and Nancy Rennick.

RIP Peter Fonda, who died on 16 age 79.
