Garrett Hedlund stars in director Jordan Ross’s tense and twisty 2023 psychological mystery thriller film The Tutor as a high society professional college tutor called Ethan Campbell, who gets an unexpected, financially rewarding job offer to teach the son of a billionaire at a beautiful remote mansion house and estate on the New York waterfront. The plan is for Ethan to be staying at the mansion for only a week, so that’s Ok then.

But he soon finds his brilliant but disturbed 17-year-old new student Jackson (Noah Schnapp) is fixated on his personal life, and then finds himself battling the obsessions of the boy, who starts threatening his darkest secrets and his carefully crafted persona. Ethan’s pregnant girlfriend (Victoria Justice) is not at all amused, and nor are the cops, and Ethan is left to defend himself alone.

The Tutor is a familiar feeling, but good, smooth and satisfying thriller depending largely on how good Hedlund is an actor, and it turns out he’s very good, in a weird but rich character role with the help of glasses, beard and a truly odd haircut, hiding his handsome self successfully. Hedlund settles in to his oddball character comfortably, relishing the luxury of a star role, with big, revealing closeups. Schnapp is suitably creepy, and Justice is suitably brittle and hard, a model of unsupportive distrust. There are three or four other characters but no one significant. There are a few loose ends too but nothing significant.

Jordan Ross’s direction is polished, offering a plush ride, and it’s fairly adroitly written by Ryan King, who pens decent dialogue and characters, and hides his surprises well. So it’s a nice little pleasure for mystery thriller buffs.

It was filmed on glorious escapist locations in Birmingham, Alabama, in April 2022.

It was released on 24 March 2023.
