David Schwimmer is very amusing as Tom Thompson, an agreeable young man corralled in as the pallbearer for a high-school buddy he hardly remembers by the deceased’s amorous mom (Barbara Hershey).

Co-writer/director Matt Reeves excellent, refreshing, quirky 1996 comedy drama also has the benefit of introducing Gwyneth Paltrow to the world at large (though she’d been making films since Shout in 1991 when she was 19). It gives her an eagerly grabbed big co-starring role as an old girlfriend of Schwimmer, called Julie DeMarco.

Hershey is also first class and Carol Kane scores too as Schwimmer’s mom. Michael Rapaport, Toni Collette, Michael Vartan also star.

Matt Reeves went on to a very successful career as the director of Cloverfield (2008), Let Me In  (2010) and Dawn of the Planet of the Apes (2014).
