The Marriage of a Young Stockbroker *** (1971, Richard Benjamin, Joanna Shimkus, Elizabeth Ashley, Adam West) – Classic Movie Review 12,565

The 1971 American romantic comedy-drama film The Marriage of a Young Stockbroker is an amusing, brightly played sex comedy starring Richard Benjamin and Joanna Shimkus.

The 1971 American romantic comedy-drama film The Marriage of a Young Stockbroker is an amusing, brightly played sex comedy in which bored, married William Alren (Richard Benjamin) enjoys porn movies and voyeurism while his wife Lisa (Joanna Shimkus) is encouraged to play the field by sister Nan (Elizabeth Ashley). Adam West (the 60s Batman) is Shimkus’s drunken husband Chester.

The Marriage of a Young Stockbroker is produced and directed (in his debut) by Lawrence Turman, producer of 1967’s high-grossing hit The Graduate, and taken from a work by the same author, Charles Webb, but this time it didn’t catch the public’s fancy.

It is Shimkus’s penultimate film, aged 28, preceding A Time for Loving (1972). In 1976 she married Sidney Poitier, who died on 6 January 2022, aged 94.

Also in the cast are Patricia Barry as Dr Sadler, Tiffany Bolling as Train Girl, Ed Prentiss, William Forrest, Johnny Scott Lee, Bill McConnell, Alma Beltran, Norman Leavitt, Ron Mesak, Bob Hastings, Kenneth Snell, and Barbara Morrison.

Turman also directed one other film, Second Thoughts (1983).

Lawrence Turman died at the Motion Picture & Television Country House and Hospital in Los Angeles on July 1, 2023, at the age of 96.
