The Girl on the Bridge *** (1951, Hugo Haas, Beverly Michaels, Robert Dane, John Close) – Classic Movie Review 12,451

Beverly Michaels appeared in two films by independent film director and producer Hugo Haas, the 1951 film noir Pickup and the follow-up release, the 1951 American black and white film noir crime film The Girl on the Bridge, their last picture together.

Co-written, and produced as well as directed by Hugo Haas, The Girl on the Bridge also stars Haas, along with Beverly Michaels, Robert Dane and John Close.

In the story and screenplay by Hugo Haas and Arnold Lipp, a kind old watchmaker, whose family died in the Holocaust, sees a beautiful blonde girl on a bridge and stops her committing suicide. They marry, but their happiness is shattered when a man from her past tries to blackmail her.

The Girl on the Bridge runs 76 minutes, is made by Hugo Hass Productions, is released by 20th Century Fox, is shot in black and white by Paul Ivano, scored by Harold Byrns, is produced by Hugo Haas, and the sets are designed by Vin Taylor.

The cast are Hugo Haas as David Toman, Beverly Michaels as Clara Barker, Robert Dane as Mario Venti, John Close as Harry Olson, Anthony Jochim as Jonathan Cooper, Judy Clark as Blonde Doll, Darr Smith as Husband, Maria Bibikov as Young Wife, and Dick Pinner as Prosecutor.

Beverly Michaels (December 29, 1927 – June 9, 2007) arrived in Hollywood in 1948 at 21, found modelling work and landed a contract to MGM Studios, making her first screen appearance in East Side, West Side (1949). Her short career includes the 1951 film noir Pickup, The Girl on the Bridge (1951), No Holds Barred, the film noir Wicked Woman (1954), the 1955 noir film Crashout, and Hammer Films’ Women without Men (1956).
