The Disorderly Orderly *** (1964, Jerry Lewis, Glenda Farrell, Susan Oliver) – Classic Movie Review 11,175

Writer-director Frank Tashlin’s 1964 Technicolor slapstick comedy The Disorderly Orderly is one of the best from Jerry Lewis. It is nicely made by former animator Tashlin, who treats the frantic star like a cartoon character. He is meant to be a private clinic hospital orderly, Jerome Littlefield, who just goes the wrong way about everything, causing chaos wherever he goes.

Doses of maudlin sentiment mar the wild visual comedy but both the script and star constantly hit the right nonsensical note.

Also in the cast are Glenda Farrell, Everett Sloane, Kathleen Freeman, Karen Sharpe, Del Moore, Susan Oliver, Alice Pearce, Jack E Leonard, Barbara Nichols, Milton Frome, John Macchia, Danny Costello, Michael Ross, Benny Rubin, Frank J Scannell, Murray Alper, Frankie Darro, Mike Mazurki, William Wellman Jr, Cissy Wellman, Dave Willock, Allyson Ames, Herbie Faye, and Muriel Landers.

The hospital and grounds were shot at the Greystone Mansion in Los Angeles.

The Disorderly Orderly is directed by Frank Tashlin, runs 90 minutes, is made by Jerry Lewis Productions and York Pictures Corporation, is released by Paramount, is written by Frank Tashlin, based on a story by Ed Haas, is shot in Technicolor by W Wallace Kelley, is produced by Jerry Lewis and Paul Jones, is scored by Joseph J Lilley, and is designed by Hal Pereira and Tambi Larsen.
