The Arrival *** (1996, Charlie Sheen, Lindsay Crouse, Richard Schiff) – Classic Movie Review 10,593

Director David N Twohy’s 1996 US/ Mexico movie The Arrival is an enjoyable, surprising and neatly done sci-fi thriller, with expert handling, plenty of tension and an eerie tone.

Charlie Sheen is effective as Zane Zaminsky, a radio satellite astronomer who hears an extra-terrestrial signal and then finds invading aliens have arrived on our planet and fancy a bit of global warming, wanting to heat it up as a new homeland.

Sequel: The Second Arrival [Arrival II] (1998), in which Patrick Muldoon stars as the brother of Charlie Sheen’s character.

Also in the cast are Lindsay Crouse, Richard Schiff, Teri Polo, Ron Silver, Shane, Phyllis Applegate, Alan Coates, Leon Rippy, Buddy Joe Hooker, Javier Morga and Tony T Johnson.

The screen-writer is David N Twohy, who wrote the star role for Sheen, with whom he had worked on Terminal Velocity (1994). The film was originally called Shockwave.

The Arrival is directed by David N Twohy, runs 115 minutes, is made by Live, Mediaworks and Steelwork, is released by Orion Pictures (1996) (US) and Entertainment (1997) (UK), is written by David N Twohy, is shot in Technicolor by Hiro Narita, is produced by Thomas G Smith, is scored by Arthur Kempel and designed by Michael Novotny.

DVD available.
