Suzy **** (1936, Jean Harlow, Cary Grant, Franchot Tone) – Classic Movie Review 7181

Jean Harlow, Cary Grant and Franchot Tone head the splendid cast who sparkle and spark up director George Fitzmaurice’s undeservedly neglected 1936 black and white vintage movie Suzy.

Grant stars as World War One French aviator André Charville, who falls for the charms of struggling US chorus gal Suzy Trent (Harlow). Suzy believes a German spy has killed her new husband Terry Moore (Tone) and flees to Paris, where she meets and marries André. But their carefree life of joy is interrupted when her presumed-dead husband reappears in their lives.

Based on a novel by Herbert Gorman, Suzy has a plot similar to Grant’s 1940 My Favorite Wife (where his presumed-dead wife turns up), with consistently watchable dramatics, spiced with witty humour (thank co-writer Dorothy Parker), and with the stars breezing through their meaty roles with considerable style.

Grant sings, rather sweetly, the Oscar-nominated Best Original Song ‘Did I Remember?’ – Walter Donaldson (music) and Harold Adamson (lyrics).

Surprisingly, Suzy is a too little known and too little seen MGM movie. It is one of Grant’s or Harlow’s least regarded films.

Also in the cast are Benita Hume, Lewis Stone, Reginald Mason, Inez Courtney, Greta Meyer, David Clyde, Elspeth Dudgeon, Tyler Brooke, Robert Livingston, Dennis Morgan, Christian Rub, Luana Walters, George Davis, Frank Dawson, Harry Cording and Charles Judels.
