Son of Robin Hood ** (1958, David Hedison, June Laverick, David Farrar, Marius Goring, Philip Friend) – Classic Movie Review 11,219

Director George Sherman’s 1958 British men in tights colour adventure film Son of Robin Hood stars David Hedison [Al Hedison], June Laverick, David Farrar, Marius Goring, Philip Friend and Delphi Lawrence.

20th Century Fox’s junior pantomime-style production in Lincoln green at least offers a different plot about Crusade veteran Jamie (Hedison) pretending to be Robin Hood’s son and co-operating with Robin’s daughter Deering Hood (Laverick), masquerading as his son, to rid the kingdom of power-crazed noble Des Roches (Farrar).

The Fox studio sent over American director Sherman and star Hedison (who had just been in their The Fly), but everyone else is on home ground in England’s green and pleasant Sherwood Forest.

There are good action sequences and excellent locations; it is prettily made in De Luxe color and CinemaScope.

Old reliables George Woodbridge and George Coulouris are Little John and Alan a Dale.

The film has a lot of Georges, also the director and both writers, George W George and George Slavin. It must have been very confusing being called George George.

June Laverick (born 11 June 1931) is a retired English film, TV and stage actress. Her peak year in films was 1958, where she appeared in three prominent roles, notably opposite Tommy Steele in The Duke Wore Jeans, as well as The Gypsy and the Gentleman (1958) as Sarah Deverill and Son of Robin Hood (1958). She followed this with Follow a Star (1959).

Son of Robin Hood is directed by George Sherman, runs 81 minutes, is made by Argo Film Productions, is released by 20th Century Fox, is written by George W George and George Slavin, is shot in De Luxe color and CinemaScope by Arthur Grant, is produced by Jack O Lamont, George Sherman and John Pellatt, and designed by Leighton Lucas.

Shooting took place on Wimbledon Common, London.
