Return of the Living Dead: Part III *** (1992, Kent McCord, James T Callahan, Sarah Douglas, J Trevor Edmond, Mindy Clarke) – Classic Movie Review 7704

Producer-director Brian Yuzna’s 1992 Return of the Living Dead: Part III is a useful, low-budget ($2,000,000 ) third episode, in which a young army brat, Curt (J Trevor Edmond), gets hold of the zombie-making chemical gas his scientist father Colonel Reynolds (Kent McCord) is experimenting with to raise his girl, Julie (Mindy [Melinda] Clarke), recently killed in a motorbike accident, from the dead. They hide in the sewers and are chased by a Hispanic gang and the military.

Some good action sequences and unusual plot twists hold the interest in this quite fresh, exciting and scary zombie outing, even if it is slightly over-extended and the level of credibility, imagination and acting is not always totally high. But it is well handled by Yuzna, with an impressive array of special effects by Steve Johnson at his disposal.

An effective bleak serious tone jettisons the first two films’ jokiness, along with their cast members.

Also in the cast are Sarah Douglas, James T Callahan, Mike Moroff, Sal Lopez and Basil Wallace.

Return of the Living Dead: Part III is directed by Brian Yuzna, runs 97 minutes, is made by Bandai Visual Company and Ozla Productions, is released by Hi Fliers, is written by John Penney, is shot by Gerry Lively, is produced by Brian Yuzna and Gary Schmoeller and is scored by Barry Goldberg, with special effects by Steve Johnson.

It follows The Return of the Living Dead (1985) and Return of the Living Dead: Part II (1987).
