Jackie Cooper stars as Scooter O’Neal, an orphan who travels by railroad to live on a ranch in Nevada, in Paramount Pictures’ 1933 American Pre-Code Western film Lone Cowboy, co-written and directed by Paul Sloane. It also stars Lila Lee, John Wray, Addison Richards.
With his out-of-work father Bill O’Neal (John Wray) about to be arrested for theft, Scooter is being sent to Nevada to visit his dad’s old friend Dobe Jones (Addison Richards), who decides to keep the kid with him.
A complex and unusual little story unfolds satisfyingly in a good vehicle for popular child actor Jackie Cooper, who had outgrown his career as a featured member of the Our Gang comedy short films ensemble from 1929 to 1931.
It is based on the 1930 novel by Will James, which was reworked and remade as the 1971 Western film Shoot Out, starring Gregory Peck.
The rail scenes were filmed on the Sierra Railroad in Tuolumne County, California.
Paramount Pictures released it on December 1, 1933 (US).
Running time: 64 minutes.
At the age of nine, Jackie Cooper became the only child actor and youngest person nominated for the Academy Award for Best Actor, for the 1931 film Skippy.
