Queen of the Amazons ** (1947, Robert Lowery, Patricia Morison, J Edward Bromberg, John Miljan) – Classic Movie Review 8067

Director Edward F Finney’s campy, low-budget 1947 poverty row adventure film Queen of the Amazons stars Robert Lowery, Patricia Morison and J Edward Bromberg. Made in black and white by Edward F Finney Productions, and released by Screen Guild Productions, it is a humble double feature running only 61 minutes.

Morison plays Jean Preston, whose fiance Greg Jones (Bruce Edwards) has disappeared, and gets a guide called Gary Lambert (Robert Lowery) to help her lead a party into the jungle in India to investigate the disappearance, but finds he has been captured by a savage female tribe led by Zita the Amazon Queen (Amira Moustafa). The action suddenly switches to Africa, no doubt just to take in the studio stock footage.

The script is quite bad but the actors give it much more than it is worth, and Finney keeps it shifting along, with enough action. Mostly, it just a so bad it’s a good laugh, though. And is is a prime example of how Hollywood misused Morison in her best years during the Forties. The poster can’t even spell her name correctly.

The cast are Robert Lowery as Gary Lambert, Patricia Morison as Jean Preston, J Edward Bromberg as comic cook Gabby, John Miljan as Narrator / Colonel Jones, Amira Moustafa as Zita, the Amazon Queen, Keith Richards as Wayne Monroe, Bruce Edwards as Greg Jones, Wilson Benge as Professor, Jack George as Commissioner, Cay Forrester as Sugi, Vida Aldana as Tondra, Hassan Khayyam as Moya, and Darby Jones as Native Chief.
