Oh, Men! Oh, Women! *** (1957, Dan Dailey, Ginger Rogers, David Niven, Barbara Rush, Tony Randall) – Classic Movie Review 11,400

Dan Dailey, David Niven and Tony Randall are all in love with Barbara Rush, while Ginger Rogers is unhappy, in Oh, Men! Oh, Women! (1957).

Writer-director Nunnally Johnson’s 1957 20th Century Fox DeLuxe colour and CinemaScope comedy Oh, Men! Oh, Women! is based on a stage play by Edward Chodorov, and stars Dan Dailey, Ginger Rogers, David Niven, Barbara Rush and Tony Randall.

Oh, dear! Daffy neurotic new patient Grant Cobbler (Randall) and crazy New York psychiatrist Dr Alan Coles (Niven) are both in love with lovely Myra Hagerman (Rush), whom Coles is about to marry, in this fast-paced, frantic and funny version of Edward Chodorov’s hit Broadway sex farce.

Meanwhile another of Niven’s patients, bored and frustrated Mildred Turner (Rogers), is unhappy that her movie star husband Arthur Turner (Dailey) is sweet on the lovely Myra (Rush) too.

The playing is very neat and spot-on, the script is crisp and precise, while director Johnson keeps it moving swiftly along with the help of the practised performances and finds a good use for CinemaScope by photographing patients lying on the analyst’s couch.

Oh, Men! Oh, Women! is jolly and diverting all round.

Poor Rogers, her film career in obvious decline, has all too little to do, billed after Dan Dailey.

It is the feature film debut of Tony Randall, who had played Dailey’s role in the Broadway show in a replacement cast.

Also in the cast are Natalie Schafer, Rachel Stephens, John Wengraf, Cheryll Clarke, Joel Fluellen, Les Raymaster, Harry Denny, Monty O’Grady, Renny McEvoy, Charles Davis, Clancy Cooper, Franklyn Farnum, Franklin Pangborn.

It runs 90 minutes.
