Meet the Applegates * (1990, Ed Begley Jr, Stockard Channing, Dabney Coleman ) – Classic Movie Review 10,193

Director Michael Lehmann’s 1990 Meet the Applegates is a defiantly peculiar surreal fantasy comedy about a colony of giant bugs from South America masquerading as a typical US family. The dad, Richard P Applegate (Ed Begley Jr), gets a job in a power station to gain access to America’s nuclear resources.

Written by Michael Lehmann and Redbeard Simmons, it is refreshingly different, but its childish humour runs out of steam early on, missing the black comedy satire mark, though the entertaining performers work hard.

It stars Ed Begley Jr, Stockard Channing, Dabney Coleman, Bobby Jacoby [Robert Jayne], Cami Cooper [Camille Cooper] and Glenn Shadix.
