Director Joseph Sergent’s 1977 MacArthur (aka MacArthur, The Rebel General) provides a fine showcase for Gregory Peck to shine in a tour de force. He was Golden Globe nominated as Best Actor in a Motion Picture – Drama.
MacArthur is a rousing, gripping war biopic, in which Peck plays General Douglas MacArthur, a man of action and vast influence in World War Two and Korea. But was he a dangerous demagogue or one of the greatest men of all time?
Among the good performances here, Dan O’Herlihy stands out as President Roosevelt, and so does Ed Flanders as President Truman. Robert Mandan plays Representative Martin, and also in the cast are Ivan Bonar, Ward Costello, Nicolas Coster, Domingo Cellis, Russell Johnson, Marj Dusay as Mrs MacArthur, Art Fleming, Johnny Brogna, Sandy Kenyon, Walter Miles, Allan Miller, Dick O’Neill, Addison Powell, Tom Rosqui and G D Spradlin.
The writers are Hal Barwood and Matthew Robbins.
