Jason X ** (2001, Kane Hodder, Lexa Doig, David Cronenberg) – Classic Movie Review 1814

1

Director James ‘Jim’ Isaac’s slick 2001 slasher horror movie sequel is Friday the 13th Part 10 in all but name. The useful new twist this time is that the story rockets into space.

2

Kane Hodder plays horrendous maniac monster Jason Voorhees, who is just a simple killing machine more or less as usual, but with a new look and a new machete. Jason is reanimated on a spaceship in the distant future sometime in the 25th century and starts to bump off the spaceship’s crew one by one, Ten Little Indians style.

With flashy visuals cinematographer thanks to Derick V Underschultz and some exciting, well-staged set pieces, the gory but clever idea, with nods to Alien, pays off. Jason X is not too bad all things considered. And Todd Farmer’s screenplay isn’t too bad either, showing flashes of wit, imagination and intelligence.

Lexa Doig stars as the feisty Rowan, Markus Parilo is Sgt Marcus, Jonathan Potts is Professor Lowe, Lisa Ryder is Kay-Em 14 and Jeff Geddis is Johnson, soldier number 1. Film director David Cronenberg has an acting role as Dr Wimmer.

The previous episode was the ninth one, Jason Goes to Hell: The Final Friday in 1993. Friday the 13th was re-animated with a remake in 2009, with Jared Padalecki and Amanda Righetti and Derek Mears as Jason.
