The intriguing 1990 comedy action thriller Flashback stars Dennis Hopper and Kiefer Sutherland as an old hippie and an FBI agent escorting him to trial.

Director Franco Amurri’s 1990 American adventure thriller film Flashback stars Dennis Hopper, Kiefer Sutherland, Carol Kane, Cliff De Young, Paul Dooley, Michael McKean and Richard Masur.

Flashback is an intriguing comedy action thriller with an odd plot about callow FBI agent John Buckner (Sutherland) escorting former 1960s hippie and New Left radical activist Huey Walker (Hopper) back for trial in Spokane, Washington, after being on the run for 20 years for disconnecting Spiro Agnew’s train car in Spokane, a crime he did not do. On the way, they cross paths with corrupt Sheriff Rand Hightower (Cliff De Young) and they flee for their lives.

The odd-couple bantering is amusing from the on-form stars, there is and good work from Kane as a 1960s leftover called Maggie and Masur as an ex-radical called Barry, as well as from the rest of the interesting cast. There is also plenty of built-in appeal to old-time hippies, though the action when it comes is unexpectedly violent.

Flashback is directed by Franco Amurri, runs 108 minutes, is made by 60/80 Productions, is released by Paramount Pictures, is written by David Loughery, is shot by Stefan Czapsky, is produced by Marvin Worth, and is scored by Barry Goldberg.

The cast are Dennis Hopper as Huey Walker, Kiefer Sutherland as Free “John” Buckner, Carol Kane as Maggie, Paul Dooley as Stark, Cliff De Young as Sheriff Rand Hightower, Richard Masur as Barry, Michael McKean as Hal Cresciman and Kathleen York as Sparkle.

The film produced a fairly popular soundtrack of Sixties and Eighties alternative music.
