Maciste, gladiatore di Sparta [The Terror of Rome Against the Son of Hercules] *** (1964, Mark Forest, Marilù Tolo) – Classic Movie Review 13,975

The 1964 Italian sword and sandal peplum film Maciste, gladiatore di Sparta [The Terror of Rome Against the Son of Hercules] stars American bodybuilder Mark Forest as Maciste and Marilù Tolo as Olimpia.

Director Mario Caiano’s 1964 Italian sword and sandal peplum film Maciste, gladiatore di Sparta, also known as The Terror of Rome Against the Son of Hercules, stars Mark Forest as Maciste and Marilù Tolo as Olimpia.

Spartan gladiator Maciste suffers persecution from the Roman Empire along with the Christians. He falls in love with a young Christian woman and must battle monsters and gladiators to save her and the other Christians.

Maciste, gladiatore di Sparta really is quite remarkable, entertainingly kitsch and campy, with an impressive production in ancient settings. American actor and bodybuilder Mark Forest makes a suitably heroic figure as Maciste, a role he played in six other movies. It is easy to love the opening gladiator sequence in the mini Colosseum, the evil Caesar, and Carlo Franci’s score. And who doesn’t love gladiator movies?

It was released in Italy on March 26, 1964.

The cast are Mark Forest as Maciste, Marilù Tolo as Olympia, Elisabeth Fanty as Livia, Robert Hundar as Zefatius, Giuseppe Addobbati as Marcellus, Franco Cobianchi as Vitellius, Ferruccio Amendola as Dammatius, Jacques Stany as Epialtus.

Lou Degni (January 6, 1933 – January 7, 2022), known as Mark Forest.

Mark Forest was Born Lorenzo Louis (Lou) Degni in Brooklyn, New York, a third generation Italian-American, his grandparents coming from Naples. He began bodybuilding at 13, later opening his own gym on Long Island. He joined the musclemen troupe in Mae West’s Las Vegas stage show. In 1960 he was recruited by Italian producers, with La vendetta di Ercole [Goliath and the Dragon] as his first film for the international market. He continued in peplum films in Rome from 1961 to 1965, using his advantage of speaking fluent Italian. He then pursued a career as a European opera singer, a tenor skilled in bel canto.
