Dungeons and Dragons ** (2000, Jeremy Irons, Thora Birch, Marlon Wayans, Bruce Payne, Justin Whalin) – Classic Movie Review 5694

Jeremy Irons overacts embarrassingly in producer-director Courtney Solomon’s only very moderate 2000 sword-and-sorcery fantasy action adventure, further held back with disappointing cheap-looking effects.

Irons plays the tyrannical magician Profion, who plots to overthrow Empress Savina (Thora Birch) to get his hands on a sceptre, giving him power over all.

Justin Whalin and Marlon Wayans play the thieves Ridley Freeborn and Snails, Lee Arenberg plays the dwarf Elwood Gutworthy, Kristen Wilson plays the elf Norda, and Bruce Payne plays Profion’s henchman Damodar.

Also in the cast are Robert Miano, Thomas Havrlik, Edward Jewesbury as Vildan Vildir and Zoe McLellan as Marina Pretensa, with Richard O’Brien as Xilus.

The screenplay by Topper Lilien and Carroll Cartwright is based on the game by E Gary Gygax.
