Mortelle Randonnée [Deadly Run] [Deadly Circuit] **** (1983, Michel Serrault, Isabelle Adjani, Guy Marchand, Guy Marchand, Stéphane Audran, Macha Méril, Geneviève Page, Sami Frey) – Classic Movie Review 8680

Director Claude Miller’s 1983 Deadly Run [Mortelle Randonnée] is a riveting, ostentatiously showy French romantic crime mystery thriller with Isabelle Adjani starring as Catherine Leiris, a pathological serial killer whose trail of corpses is pursued by Beauvoir (Michel Serrault), a sad old private detective with troubles of his own.

Deadly Run [Mortelle Randonnée] is heady, showy stuff, rousingly done by a special cast and director working flat out, with help from Michel Autard’s fine screenplay based on Marc Behm’s novel The Eye of the Beholder, plus Gilbert Duhalde and Pierre Lhomme’s striking cinematography.

It also stars Guy Marchand, Stéphane Audran, Macha Méril, Geneviève Page, and Sami Frey.

Also in the cast are Dominique Frot, Patrick Bouchitey, Isabelle Ho, François Bernheim, Gilberte Lauvray, Michel Such, Paul Anrieu and Jean-Claude Brialy.

Mortelle Randonnée [Deadly Run (UK)] [Deadly Circuit] (US) is directed by Claude Miller, runs 120 minutes, is made by Miller, Charles Gassot, T F 1 Films Production and Teléma, is released by G.E.F. (1983) (France), is written by Michel Autard, based on Marc Behm’s novel The Eye of the Beholder, is shot in Eastmancolor by Gilbert Duhalde and Pierre Lhomme, is produced by Bernard Grenet, is scored by Carla Bley and is designed by Jean-Pierre Kohut-Svelko.

It is remade as Eye of the Beholder (1999), starring Ewan McGregor and Ashley Judd.
