Cowboy *** (1958, Jack Lemmon, Glenn Ford, Brian Donlevy, Anna Kashfi, Dick York, Richard Jaeckel, King Donovan) – Classic Movie Review 6829

You don’t expect to find Jack Lemmon in a Western, but here he is in the entertaining and imaginative 1958 cowboy tale Cowboy, based on Frank Harris’s apocryphal autobiography My Reminiscences as a Cowboy On the Trail, chronicling his first cattle trail drive as a greenhorn from Chicago.

Lemmon plays the young Chicago hotel clerk Frank Harris, who heads West to make his home on the range, Glenn Ford plays Tom Reece, his tough boss on the cattle-driving trail, while Brian Donlevy plays Doc Bender, a bitter gunfighter and trail hand.

A dynamic series of Western adventures is atmospherically directed by Delmer Daves with an eye to realism and handsome Technicolor landscapes – Charles Lawton Jr’s cinematography is a star.

Also in the cast are Anna Kashfi, Dick York, Richard Jaeckel, King Donovan, Victor Manuel Mendoza, Vaughn Taylor, Donald Randolph, James Westerfield, Frank DeKova, Buzz Henry, William Leslie and Eugene Iglesias.

Cowboy is directed by Delmer Daves, runs 92 minutes, is made by Phoenix, is released by Columbia, is written by Edmund H North, is shot in Technicolor by Charles Lawton Jr, is produced by Julian Blaustein, is scored by George Duning and Maurice Stoloff, and is designed by Cary Odell.
