Barnabo of the Mountains [Barnabo delle Montagne] **** (1994, Marco Pauletti, Duilio Fontana, Carlo Caserotti) – Classic Movie Review 8600

Marco Pauletti stars as mountain man Barnabo in co-writer/ director Mario Brenta’s extraordinary, atmospheric, poetic Italian neo-realist mountain movie that does require some patience and understanding, but it will reward it. It is remarkable as a minimalist, old-style art movie and Nineties Italian art work.

Barnabo of the Mountains [Barnabo delle Montagne] is lovingly made by Brenta, freely adapting a novel by Dino Buzzati, with co-screenwriters Angelo Pasquini and Francesco Alberti.

The cast is comprised of non-professionals. Also in the cast are Duilio Fontana, Carlo Caserotti, Antonio Vecelio, Angelo Chiesura, Alessandra Milan, Elisa Garperini and Marco Tonio.

Barnabo of the Mountains [Barnabo delle Montagne] is directed by Mario Brenta, runs 124 minutes, is made by Flach, Nautilus Film, Les Films Number One and Rai Uno, distributed by Istituto Luce-Italnoleggio Cinematografico (1994) (Italy) and Artificial Eye (UK), is written by Mario Brenta, Angelo Pasquini and Francesco Alberti, is shot in colour by Vicenzo Marano, is produced by Tommaso Dazzi and Gabriella Lazzoni, and is scored by Stefano Caprioli.
