Another Shore ** (1948, Robert Beatty, Moira Lister, Stanley Holloway) – Classic Movie Review 10,344

The 1948 film Another Shore is a minor Ealing Studios comic drama from director Charles Crichton (The Lavender Hill Mob, A Fish Called Wanda) about a young Dublin dreamer called Gulliver Sheils (Robert Beatty) who fantasises about living in the South Seas, and gets his chance after helping a generous rich old man in a traffic accident.

[Spolier alert] The tycoon offers to take him to the South Seas, but then they are involved in an accident, and Gulliver chucks it all in for a woman, local beauty Jennifer (Moira Lister).

This stilted piece of whimsy, with a screenplay by Walter Meade based on the novel by Kenneth Reddin, engages the attention without engaging the emotions or the brain too much. Stanley Holloway is the main reason to watch as Alastair, the drunken sot who tempts Beatty, though Douglas Slocombe’s black and white cinematography is also outstanding.

Also in the cast are Michael Medwin, Maureen Delaney [Maureen Delany], Fred O’Donovan, Sheila Manahan, Dermot Kelly, Wilfrid Brambell, Irene Worth, Michael Golden, Bill Shine, Muriel Aked, Desmond Keane, Edie Martin, W A Kelly, Michael Dolan and Michael O’Mahoney.

Another Shore is directed by Charles Crichton, runs 91 minutes, is made by Ealing Studios, is released by General Film Distributors (1948) (UK), is written by Walter Meade, based on the novel by Kenneth Reddin, is shot in black and white by Douglas Slocombe, is produced by Michael Balcon and Ivor Montagu, is scored by Georges Auric, and designed by Malcolm Baker-Smith.
