Angora Love **** (1929, Stan Laurel, Oliver Hardy, Edgar Kennedy, Harry Bernard) – Classic Movie Review 7595

Stan Laurel and Oliver Hardy upset their suspicious landlord (Edgar Kennedy) and another house-guest (Charlie Hall) when they hide a stray goat in their ‘no pets’ lodgings after they hear that the pet-shop owner thinks that it has been stolen.

Laurel and Hardy’s last two-reeler silent movie comedy short Angora Love (1929) is fast and funny, with Ollie bathing the smelly goat as the highlight.

Though made as a silent, it was also released with synchronised sound and music, and this is the version used for TV.

Harry Bernard (as policeman) and Charley Young (as mercantile owner Mr Caribeau, and owner of the goat Penelope) are also in the cast.

Angora Love is directed by Lewis R Foster, runs 20 minutes, is made by Hal Roach Studios, is released by MGM, is written by Leo McCarey (story) and H M Walker (titles), is shot in black and white by George Stevens, is produced by Hal Roach and is scored (2011) by Robert Israel.

Laurel and Hardy’s final silent film Angora Love was released on 14 December 1929 when most American studios and cinemas had fully converted to sound films.

Angora Love is remade in Laughing Gravy (1930) and reworked in The Chimp (1932). And its foot rubbing gag is re-used in Beau Hunks (1931).

It is available on the Lost Films of Laurel & Hardy 2 DVD.
