An Innocent Affair [Don’t Trust Your Husband] ** (1948, Fred MacMurray, Madeleine Carroll, Charles ‘Buddy’ Rogers, Louise Allbritton, Anne Nagel, Rita Johnson, Alan Mowbray) – Classic Movie Review 11,096

‘They’re burning the Scandal at both ends…’

Fred MacMurray stars as an ad executive called Vincent Doane who forgets to tell his wife Paula Doane (Madeleine Carroll) that his work forces him to spend evenings with lovely widow (and his ex-fiancée) Margot Fraser (Louise Allbritton). Madeleine gets mad and flirts with tobacco-rich cigarette tycoon Claude Kimball (Charles ‘Buddy’ Rogers).

Director Lloyd Bacon’s 1948 comedy An Innocent Affair [Don’t Trust Your Husband] is a tired and contrived farce, despite the attractive players, who are appealing but are not seen at their best among all the clichés. Sadly, Carroll seems past her prime in her penultimate film.

It is the last of a run of five movies that MacMurray and Carroll made (they also made Café Society, Virginia, Honeymoon in Bali, One Night in Lisbon) together.

Also in the cast are Rita Johnson, Alan Mowbray, Michael Romanoff [Mike Romanoff], Anne Nagel, Matt McHugh, William Tannen, Pierre Watkin, Marie Blake, Susan Miller, Eddie Le Baron and James Seay.

The movie was titled Don’t Trust Your Husband in the UK.

Don’t Trust Your Husband [An Innocent Affair] is directed by Lloyd Bacon, runs 90 minutes, is made by James Nasser Productions Inc, is released by United Artists, is written by Lou Breslow and Joseph Hoffman, is shot in black and white by Edward Cronjager, is produced by James Nasser and Ted Nasser, and scored by Hans J Salter.

It is shot in General Service Studios, 1040 N. Las Palmas, Hollywood.

Madeleine Carroll is remembered for Hitchcock’s The 39 Steps (1935), The Prisoner of Zenda (1937), My Favorite Blonde (1942) and her last feature The Fan [Lady Windermere’s Fan] (1949).
