Craig Johnson’s clever and humorous 2018 romantic comedy film Alex Strangelove stars Daniel Doheny as high school class president Alex, who has long been dating Claire (Madeline Weinstein), but meets gay guy Elliot (Antonio Marziale) and he’s confused.

Daniel Doheny stars as Alex Truelove, a clever, ambitious, nerdy high school guy, who plans to end his teenage school years by finally losing his virginity. He has a bright future and a nice girlfriend in Claire (Madeline Weinstein), but his life changes after meeting at a party the handsome, sweet, understanding Elliot (Antonio Marziale), an openly gay teenager who has an obvious crush on Alex and a clear knowledge of sex and love.

Alex’s interactions with Elliot lead him to question his sexuality and he tells his friend Dell (Daniel Zolghadri) he may be bisexual, but Dell says that he is just nervous about his imminent plan to lose his virginity to Claire. One day Alex impulsively kisses Elliot on his bed in his bedroom, but immediately regrets it. Eventually, Elliot, with the help of Claire, takes Alex on a journey to discover his life and true self.

Leading the good performances, Daniel Doheny is likeable and appealing, Antonio Marziale is charming, Madeline Weinstein is cute, and Daniel Zolghadri is entertaining. The script is amusing, sometimes witty, sometimes funny, often warm, saying all the right things, sometimes frankly. Mixing a coming-of-age story and a fairly raunchy comedy, it moves along briskly, swiftly and energetically in its compact and tidy running time of 99 minutes.
