Jamie Foxx stars as a petty crook called Alvin Sanders who unwittingly holds the key to a cache of $42 million worth of gold treasure and is pursued by assorted villains.

He gets arrested for stealing prawns, goes to jail and ends up sharing a cell with John Delano Jaster (Robert Pastorelli), who double-crossed his partner Bristol (Doug Hutchison) while stealing $42 million in gold from the Federal Reserve Bank of New York.

While being interrogated by hard man Treasury Agent Edgar Clenteen (David Morse), Jaster dies of heart failure, leaving a cryptic message about the location of the loot. The Feds decide to release Sanders to use him as bait against the dangerous Bristol.

Director Antoine Fuqua’s 2000 crime comedy film Bait is an irritating, abrasive action comedy, with the good cast struggling and giving over-broad performances, and a slack, illogical screenplay with gags that miss the mark.

Bait was released on September 15, 2000, and was a huge financial failure for production company Castle Rock Entertainment and distributor Warner Bros, grossing only $15.5 million worldwide against its $51 million budget.

Antoine Fuqua recalled: ‘Bait was one of those movies that’s not me. It wasn’t like the stuff I was passionate about was coming across my desk, and it was a chance to work with Jamie. And I thought, well, maybe I do have a little bit of humour in me. But I don’t! It didn’t work out for me.’

David Morse replaced Kris Kristofferson as Treasury Agent Edgar Clenteen.

It was filmed in Ontario, Canada.
