Dry Wind [Vento Seco] ** (2020, Leandro Faria Lelo, Allan Jacinto Santana, Renata Carvalho, Rafael Teóphilo) – Classic Movie Review 14,022

Daniel Nolasco‘s 2020 Brazilian erotic fantasy drama film Dry Wind [Vento Seco] stars Leandro Faria Lelo as a factory worker whose routine turns into a gay love triangle.

Writer/ director Daniel Nolasco’s 2020 Brazilian erotic fantasy drama film Dry Wind [Vento Seco] is a rather slow and often boring arty gay porn movie, telling a tiny story with huge artistic pretentions and much eye-catching visual flair. Mixing fantasy sequences with telling its actual story, it also manages plenty of weird, full-on graphic sex. It wants to mess with the audience’s senses, and makes a bit of a mess, though some might call it an Interesting mess.

Leandro Faria Lelo stars as morose, hairy, unfit, middle-aged Sandro, who works in a fertiliser factory in the very dry area around Catalan in Brazil’s state of Goiás. He goes swimming in a man-made lake and cruising in the woods, and spends his evenings doing jigsaw puzzles of landscapes. Against the odds, Sandro seems to be a man magnet. Understandably, fertiliser doesn’t seem to be his main interest in life, sex is.

He has sex with his co-worker Ricardo (Allan Jacinto Santana), who likes him, but he can’t be bothered. Then Maicon (Rafael Teóphilo) zooms into their small town in his leather gear astride his huge bike, and flirts with Ricardo, then starts a thing with him, firing Sandro’s extreme feelings of jealousy.

Fassbinder might have loved it. Hey, he might have made it. He kind of did with Querelle. Almodovar could have made it in his Eighties days. Luca Guadagnino could have made it. He kind of did with Queer (2024). But, if they’d made it, it would still be pretty tedious. Interesting, maybe, but tedious.

The alienating film paints a graphic picture of Sandro’s self-absorbed, selfish, monotonous life, and comes across as tedious and pointless as his life.

It was released on September 17, 2020.
