Director Tay Garnett’s 1937 20th Century Fox black and white screwball romantic comedy film Love Is News stars Tyrone Power, Loretta Young, Don Ameche, Slim Summerville and George Sanders.
Love Is News is a featherweight satirical comedy, though it is strongly cast, very well played, likeable and funny. Tyrone Power stars as one of the newspaper paparazzi, Steve Layton, who has the tables turned on him by socialite Toni Gateson (Loretta Young) after he persists in writing stories about her affairs. She decides to teach him a lesson by announcing her engagement to him and making him squirmingly newsworthy.
Of course, after much bickering, their love is news for real.
It is typical 1930s screwball stuff, and good of its kind. Other essential elements include Don Ameche as Steve’s friend and boss Martin Canavan, Slim Summerville as Judge Hart who throws Steve and Tony in jail and George Sanders as Toni’s real fiancé Count Andre de Guyon. It is a very polished, practised cast.
It is written by Harry Tugend, Jack Yellen, Allen Rivkin and Wallace Sullivan, based on the story: Love Is News by William R Lipman and Frederick Stephani.
It is Power’s first film with top billing.
Power reprised his role in the arguably even funnier 1948 remake, That Wonderful Urge.
