Alejandro Quintana stars as a Mexican teen called Eduardo who explores his sexual identity over one way too eventful day in the big city, in writer/ director Rafael Ruiz Espejo’s 2025 Mexican romantic drama film The Last First Time [El fin de las primeras veces].

If it explores themes of love and loss, the loss is of youth, innocence and his virginity, and the love is of seemingly of every nice looking boy who comes his way. And apparently there are quite a few in the big city. It’s not love at all. He might delude himself into thinking it, but it is actually just lust. Eduardo’s first love is lust.

Eduardo seems a nice, quiet, clean boy, extremely well and probably strictly brought up, so his sudden surrender to this sexual chaos is careless, risky and possibly dangerous. He throws caution to the wind, when it might have been better, safer anyway, to stop on the amber light. At any rate, he grows up fast, embracing adulthood in a single day. Commendable or not, he boldly goes. Maybe that’s what being 18 is all about, at least when you’re 18. Your adults would go crazy if they could see you now.

Eduardo, an 18-year-old kid from a small village in Jalisco, travels to the big city of Guadalajara for an exam. In this for him strange city, with strange people, away from the eyes of his bossy mother, he experiences his first encounters in love and sex, trying desperately to fit in and enjoy, maybe trying too hard. Anyway, it’s a day and night to remember. And, luckily, he survives it, though it’s a near thing.

it’s at heart an oddly sweet and tender story, with a lot of very strong sex, actually bitter-sweet, and rather sad, with a sour after-taste. Alejandro Quintana convinces every step of the rocky way his character has chosen.

Jaime Bernache plays Checo.
