Director Edward T Venturini’s 1938 Paramount Western film In Old Mexico finds William Boyd is back as black-clad cowboy hero Hopalong Cassidy in this sequel to the previous year’s Borderland.
The decent script, combining traditional cowboy and suspense elements, has Hoppy investigating a friend’s murder while on a working trip to Mexico.
It is a briskly handled, above-average B-Western, with zestful performances behind the swift action, nice humour and pleasant singing.
George ‘Gabby’ Hayes, Russell Hayden, Paul Sutton, Betty Amann, Jane Clayton, Trevor Bardette, Glenn Strange and Al Garcia are along for the ride.
