‘The bullet-riddled story of the Dembrow gang! And of the woman who rode with them… to scourge the West with terror… and lift your heart to new pinnacles of excitement!’

Director George Sherman’s 1946 Columbia Pictures American Technicolor Western film Renegades stars Evelyn Keyes, Larry Parks, Willard Parker, Edgar Buchanan, Jim Bannon and Forrest Tucker.

Bored heroine Hannah Brockway (Evelyn Keyes) quits her doctor husband Dr Sam Martin (Willard Parker) for the outlaw life. Ben ‘Taylor’ Dembow (Larry Parks), the son of a Western villain, Kirk Dembrow (Edgar Buchanan), whose outlaw gang also embraces Cash Dembrow (Jim Bannon) and Frank Dembrow (Forrest Tucker), wants to tread an honest path, but finds the lure of crime too strong. Keyes fancies Parks but gets tired of his wicked, wicked ways.

Also cast are Ludwig Donath, Frank Sully, Willard Robertson, Paul E Burns, Francis Ford and Virginia Brissac.

Everyone succumbs to the predictable premise and plot development in this swift and slick but forgettable Western that at least can boast a different slant on the predictable premise and plot. A handsome production and William Snyder’s cinematography in eye-popping Technicolor are big pluses.

The cast are Evelyn Keyes as Hannah Brockway, Willard Parker as Dr Sam Martin, Larry Parks as Ben Dembrow / Ben Taylor, Edgar Buchanan as Kirk Dembrow, Jim Bannon as Cash Dembrow, Forrest Tucker as Frank Dembrow, Ludwig Donath as Jackorski, Frank Sully as Link, Willard Robertson as Nathan Brockway, Paul E. Burns as Alkali Kid, Francis Ford and Virginia Brissac.

It is written by Melvin Levy and  Francis Edward Faragoh, based on a story by Harold Shumate.

It runs just 88 minutes.

Release date: June 13, 1946 (US).

Keyes also starred with Parks in Columbia’s hit The Jolson Story (1946).
