There’s a Girl in My Soup *** (1970, Peter Sellers, Goldie Hawn, Tony Britton, Nicky Henson, John Comer, Diana Dors) – Classic Movie Review 9164

Nicky Henson in Fawlty Towers.

Nicky Henson in Fawlty Towers.

Director Roy Boulting’s 1970 British comedy There’s a Girl in My Soup stars Peter Sellers and Goldie Hawn in an ordinary, over-familiar comic tale about a lecherous television star called Robert Danvers (Sellers) and the nimble manoeuvres of his latest dizzy dame, the 19-year-old American girl Marion (Hawn), available but unromantic.

Ordinary, over-familiar it may be, but it is lifted by the charismatic performances of the ideal, well-matched stars, who have just enough witty lines to go on, written by Terence Frisby, based on his stage play.

There’s a Girl in My Soup perhaps lacks charm and substance, but it is still passable fun and great to see Sellers and Hawn working together. And there is a long list of British comedy acting worthies in grand support: Tony Britton, Nicky Henson, John Comer, Diana Dors, Judy Campbell, Gabrielle Drake, Nicola Pagett, Christopher Cazenove, Caroline Seymour, Thorley Walters, Avril Angers, Lance Percival, Mark Dignam and Eric Barker.

It is based on Terence Frisby’s play, which featured Gig Young and Barbara Ferris on Broadway.

There’s a Girl in My Soup is directed by Roy Boulting, runs 95 minutes, is made by Columbia Pictures, Frankovich Productions and Ascot Productions, is released by Columbia, is written by Terence Frisby and Peter Kortner (additional dialogue), based on Terence Frisby’s play, is shot by Harry Waxman (Eastmancolor), is produced by John Dark (executive producer), M J Frankovich and John Boulting, is scored by Mike d’Abo, and is designed by John Howell.

RIP Nicky Henson, who died on 15 December 2019, aged 74.
