The Crater Lake Monster * (1977, Richard Cardella, Glen Roberts, Mark Siegel) – Classic Movie Review 8598

Director William R Stromberg’s hopelessly inept 1977 horror fantasy movie The Crater Lake Monster lacks in thrills, chills and terror and scores only for unintentional laughs, wooden performances and an OK animated dinosaur monster (stop motion animation by David Allen).

Oregon’s Crater Lake is menaced by a flesh-gobbling beast, a plesiosaur-like monster awakened by a falling meteor that hatches a prehistoric dinosaur egg. The monster likes scantily clad swimmers, but unknown actors Richard Cardella as local sheriff Steve and Glen Roberts Mark Siegel as boat rental guys Arnie and Mitch save the day.

The Crater Lake Monster is in the Jurassic Park/ Jaws/ Lake Placid monster movie tradition, but with no bite, instead just all those unintentional laughs, which makes it one of the good bad movies.

Also in the cast are Bob Hyman, Kacey Cobb, Richard Garrison, Michael F Hoover, Suzanne Lewis and Marv Eliot.

The Crater Lake Monster is directed by William R Stromberg, runs 85 minutes, is made by Crown International Pictures, is released by Crown International Pictures (1977) (US), is written by William R Stromberg and Richard Cardella (original story and screenplay), is shot in Metrocolor by Paul Gentry, is produced by William R Stromberg, is scored by Will Zens and is designed by Roger Heisman.
