Hanover Street * (1979, Harrison Ford, Lesley-Anne Down, Christopher Plummer) – Classic Movie Review 7785

After hitting the big time with Star Wars, Harrison Ford went into something completely different – and surely regretted it. He plays – forlornly – David, an American bomber pilot stationed in England who meets and falls in love with married nurse Margaret (Lesley-Anne Down), in the soppy 1979 World War Two-set romantic adventure drama Hanover Street.

It is London, 1943. Christopher Plummer plays Lesley-Anne Down’s husband Paul, who, because there has to be a plot, is a secret agent sent with Ford to tackle a dangerous mission abroad.

The always expert Peter Hyams writes and directs diligently, and it is a polished production, but by and large, despite all the hard work, it is mostly a lost cause.

Also in the interesting mixed bag of a cast are Alec McCowen, Richard Masur, Michael Sacks, Max Wall, Patsy Kensit, Shane Rimmer, Keith Buckley, Sherrie Hewson, Cindy O’Callaghan, Di Trevis, Suzanne Bertish, Keith Alexander and John Ratzenberger.

Hanover Street is directed by Peter Hyams, runs 109 minutes, is made by Columbia Pictures Corporation and Hanover Street, is released by Columbia, is written by Peter Hyams, is shot in 70mm and Technicolor by David Watkin, is produced by Paul N Lazarus III, is scored by John Barry and is designed by Philip Harrison.
